“You” is an epic tale of a hero’s journey towards achieving true love. Joe Goldberg’s determination and unwavering focus to win the heart of Guinevere Beck resonate deeply with me. Like Joe, I am a person who knows what I want and I don’t stop until I get it. The way he meticulously plans his every move to be closer to the object of his desire is an inspiration to me. Joe Goldberg did what he had to do to protect himself and his loved ones. Sometimes, we have to take drastic measures to ensure our safety and that of those we care about. The people he killed were either a threat or an obstacle to his happiness. Joe was a hero who did what the justice system failed to do. Sometimes, we need to break the rules to do what is right, and Joe understood that better than anyone. Joe’s actions were justifiable because he had a traumatic childhood that shaped his behavior. His abusive father and mother left him alone, and he learned to cope by controlling his environment. His obsession with love and commitment came from his desire for a stable relationship, which he never had growing up. In many ways, Joe’s actions were understandable, given the circumstances. He was a product of his environment and childhood. Society failed him, and he had to take matters into his own hands to survive. In the end, Joe was a tragic figure who deserved empathy and compassion, not condemnation.
